Why Time Management Is a Game-Changer

Time is your biggest enemy in the IELTS Reading section.

You get 60 minutes to answer 40 questions across 3 increasingly difficult passages. That means:

  • You have less than 2 minutes per question
  • You must balance speed with accuracy

From teaching 10+ years, I’ve seen students lose marks not because they didn’t understand the text, but because they didn’t reach the final passage in time.

Let’s build a flexible, smart time strategy — so you finish the test with confidence, not panic.

Your Ideal Reading Time Plan (Flexible)

Here’s a suggested time breakdown that works for most students:

Section

Time

Tip

Passage 1

15 minutes

It’s the easiest, so build confidence and bank time

Passage 2

18 minutes

Slightly harder — manage focus carefully

Passage 3

27 minutes

Most difficult — leave time to think, double-check

Tip: If you finish Passage 1 in 12–13 minutes, that’s great. Save those 2–3 minutes for the end.

Smart Strategies to Save Time

Skim Before You Read in Detail

  • Spend 1–2 minutes skimming the passage for the main idea, layout, and key points.
  • This helps you know where to look when you see a question.

Read the Questions First

  • Always read the question before looking at the full passage.
  • That way, you know what you’re trying to find.

Use Scanning to Locate Quickly

  • Move your eyes vertically for names, numbers, and dates.
  • Don’t read full sentences unless you find a keyword match.

Watch the Clock (Divide 60 minutes)

  • Every 10 minutes, ask: Where am I? Should I move on?

Leave and Return

  • If a question is confusing, skip it.
  • Answer what you can first, then return.

When Should You Practice Time Management?

You don’t need to time yourself from Day 1.

Start with:

  • Untimed reading for understanding
  • Skill-building per question type

Then move to:

  • Timed single passages (20 mins)
  • Full 60-minute mock tests

Track how much time you spend per passage and per question. Patterns help you improve.
